Registering to vote shouldn't be so much trouble

More than two months after checking the box to register on a driver's license application, Toscano contacted the Houston Chronicle last week saying she still didn't have a voter registration card in her hand, and that the county could not confirm she'd be able to vote next month. A self-described "i-dotter and t-crosser," Toscano says she made a file to keep track of all the documents she needed, and still ended up having to run out to the car to get an original vehicle registration when her copy wasn't good enough. [...] at the front, Toscano received the same driver's license number she had in 2003 and she made sure she checked the box to register to vote. According to DPS, that information is sent automatically to the Texas Secretary of State's Office. Toscano says she was instructed to go online and download a form from the Secretary of State's Office, and send it to the county. The story was familiar to Nan Toole, a 57-year-old Houston environmental consultant, who discovered similar problems while running a voter registration drive at Houston Community College campuses this year. Since February, Toole said she and volunteers have signed up 1,872 college students, including many who said they'd already checked the box on their driver's license applications.
