Classes offer chance to sip, swirl

A number of area businesses are encouraging clients to take a stab at being creative - suggesting a few dabs of paint on a palette and a couple of glasses of wine might unveil an inner artist. Part art lesson and part social outing, the businesses offer everything needed to unleash artistic talent - paint, brushes, canvas, studio space and a professional painter to lead the way. Guests reserve a night, pick a project, bring their own wine and sometimes grab dinner while waiting for paint to dry. The BYOB-art class businesses are bringing home a profit, finding much demand for a creative outlet in a relaxed environment. Co-owners Jeff Bernals and Marcia Brockett had been operating a frame shop and art gallery Creative Framing & Mirrors since 2006. Painting parties start at night, right when the frame shop closes for the day. [...] business has expanded to two locations - one at 6915 Cypresswood Drive, serving Spring, Champions and The Woodlands and another on 11410 Louetta, Suite B, west of Texas 249, serving Tomball and Cypress. Bernals said both locations are popular for birthday parties, baby and bridal showers, corporate events and an alternative to the usual weekend spots. Owner Andrea O'Dowd studied business and worked in sales and management before opening a new location of the chain that originated in 2007 in Louisiana. Painting with a Twist has turned the experience of creating art into art as entertainment for individuals who have never painted before. "About 90 percent of the people who walk through the door say they can only draw a stick figure," she said.
